WA Orders Dollar Tree to Pay $190,000 Over Toxic Children's Products

Seattle, WA

October 6, 2023

OLYMPIA – Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced today that Dollar Tree has agreed to pay $190,000 and to more thoroughly test children's products after a state investigation found bracelets and pencil pouches in the company's stores contained toxic chemicals.

The investigation by the Washington State Department of Ecology found that numerous children's bracelets and pencil pouches sold by Dollar Tree contained high levels of lead and cadmium, which are toxic chemicals that can cause serious health problems in children, including developmental delays and learning disabilities.

"Dollar Tree put children at risk by failing to ensure that its products were safe," Ferguson said.

Under the terms of a legally binding consent decree, Dollar Tree must:

  • Pay $190,000 to the state.
  • Conduct more thorough testing of children's products, including testing for lead and cadmium.
  • Develop and implement a compliance plan to ensure that its products meet safety standards.

The consent decree also prohibits Dollar Tree from selling any children's products that contain lead or cadmium above the legal limits.

"This settlement will help to ensure that Dollar Tree takes the necessary steps to protect children from exposure to toxic chemicals," Ferguson said.

The investigation was conducted by the Washington State Department of Ecology and the Attorney General's Office.
