Costa Rican Stalemate Leaves Brazil Hoping
Brazil was held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Costa Rica on Friday, leaving the five-time champions needing a win in their final group game to secure a place in the knockout rounds of the 2024 World Cup.
Costa Rica, who had lost their opening game to Serbia, defended resolutely and frustrated Brazil for much of the match. The closest Brazil came to scoring was when Vinicius Jr. went down under contact in the Costa Rican box, but the referee waved away his appeals for a penalty.
Brazil will now face Cameroon in their final group game on Monday. A win will guarantee them a place in the knockout rounds, while a draw could be enough if Serbia fails to beat Switzerland.
Costa Rica, meanwhile, will face Switzerland in their final group game. A win would give them a chance of reaching the knockout rounds, but they will need Serbia to beat Brazil.
